New E-mail Subscription Option for New Blog

Hello there!

I’ve heard from several of you who would like to keep receiving  posts from my new blog via e-mail.

I was finally able to figure out how to add the widget that will allow readers to subscribe to and receive my posts this way.

Just go to my new blog via this link.

On the side bar on the right you’ll find the “Subscribe to my Posts” sign.

Just type in your e-mail address and hit subscribe!

Free Calligraphy Valentines!

So it’s valentines day and I thought I’d make some free valentines for you!

Just right click on any of the images below and click “Save image as”.

Save to your Desktop so you don’t forget where you put it!

They are made to fit a 5″x7″ card.  So you will need to insert them into your publishing document (Word, Photoshop, Illustrator..etc) and size down to fit onto half of an 8.5″ x 11″.

Then cut out and place on a colored piece of card stock folded in half. Red would be a good choice.

You may want to trim them up smaller so there’s enough of the paper color underneath showing to make a border.

Insert your own personal message inside:)

This one is for you font lovers out there:)

This one is simple and sweet.

And this one is for those girls who like to spice it up on Valentines Day.  You know who you are:)

Lettering Art Studio New Website Launched!

My new website is up! It incorporates my website and blog on the same site.   It’s actually been up for a while but I’m just now getting around to asking you to make the switch to my shiny new blog.  Pretty please??

DIY Flower Table Number Tutorial

This DIY flower table number tutorial will take you step by step through the process of creating these floral cards for your table.

These were just my small contribution to a big Dallas wedding planned by Colin Cowie of Oprah fame.

Once again, DFW Events, the impeccable party planner, was the local coordinator.

The bride loved magnolias so they were a featured part of the event.

The wedding colors included both gold and silver paired with this beautiful green.

So I created a special mix of both metallics to hand illustrate the magnolia in back of the numbers, which were done in an off white.

Of course the numbers were brush lettered by hand but I’m going to let you know how you can create these even if you aren’t a lettering artist.

Your going to use the same process for both the numbers and the flowers.

If you’re a lettering artist, use a flat brush and gouache paint to letter the numbers.  I used a  1/4″ Scepter Gold II brush and a guide ( see in pic below) to help me center the numbers.

If your not a lettering artist,  find numbers you like from a favorite font.  Size them up on the computer so they will fit nicely in the center of your paper.

Print and trace onto tracing paper.

These cards are 6″ square heavy card stock provided by the client.

If you want double sided cards, I suggest making two separate sides and adhering them with double sided tape so they will be stiffer and stand up better.

Next use transfer paper ( I used white since I had dark paper) and LIGHTLY outline the numbers onto the card stock using a pencil or stylus, as shown in the pic. (Available at any craft store.)

You can use the guide as seen in one of the pics above for centering.

Fill in numbers with gouache paint ( water based paint found at art stores) acrylic paint or paint pens.

Now do the same thing for the flower of your choice.  Find a picture of one you like on the internet,  ( There’s lots of sites about flowers that you can use so you don’t end up with copyrighted material.)

Download it, size it on your computer , print it and put it on tracing paper.  Or you might find a picture you like in a gardening magazine or the garden section of the newspaper.

Make sure to line the flower up over the number before inserting the transfer paper in between and LIGHTLY tracing.

Here’s an important note: Transfer paper has a wax like substance to it, so when you trace it onto the card be sure not to trace on top of the numbers.

Otherwise, you’ll end up with lines on the numbers that will not erase.

With a round brush ( You can get an inexpensive one like the Loew-Cornell Soft Comfort 14000 Round at JoAnn fabrics) brush over the traced lines of the flower with whatever color you desire.

Again goache or acrylic paint will work. If you want a finer line, or don’t want to mess with a brush, try a paint pen.

The gold and silver I used was a combination of gold gouache with gold and silver Schmincke brand powders mixed together.

Even if you just create them for the bridal table, it will add a beautiful look to your table!

Boxed Baby Shower Invitation for Twins

These boxed baby shower invitations were a custom order for a client of the always fabulous DFW Events.

The two rattles represent the twins  (a boy and a girl) that will be arriving soon:)

The precious rattle invitation is by Stevie Streck Designs. My part was to design, create and address all the boxes.

The rhinestone “B” is for the parents to be’s last name.

Each box was addressed in hand lettering with a “Once upon a time…” banner to reflect the theme.

Adding a touch of “stickles” gave it just enough sparkle.

A total of 93 were sent to lucky guests !

This delicious custom cookie made by “It’s a Mary cake” served as a sweet favor.

Personalized tags (in my Dom Loves Mary font and Belluccia font borders) let the guests know that a donation was being made “in honor of our guests and our little ones” to the Genesis Women’s Shelter.

What a lovely gesture by the hostess!

UPDATE

I have received many calls and e-mails from people interested in having me create these invitations for them.

This is an extremely labor intensive project.

Since I am focusing more on font design, I’m not taking on large projects like this.

I’d be happy to instruct you on how to make the decorated boxes yourself, if you are so inclined.

The boxes came from Uline. The material can be purchased at any fabric store.

The ribbon and rhinestone letter came from Hobby Lobby.

Please note, I did not create the invitation.  It was ordered by the client from Beeyond Paper

The double rattle invitation pictured above is no longer available.

The single rattle is available. So you could order both blue and pink and put them together in the box.

2013 Calendar with Belluccia Calligraphy Font

I received this beautiful calender of gorgeous flowers from my dear friend and talented designer, Bev Verbeke.  I’m thrilled that my Belluccia calligraphy font was chosen to be a part of this project.

Each month features a different edible flower, many of which are also known as medicinal. The inside cover offers interesting information about the uses or history of each flower.

For instance begonias can have a tangy or lemony flavor.  You can add them to green salads or vegetable dishes!

Each page offers an inspiring quote and an affirmation. Affirmations are positive statements that are used, ideally daily, to manifest that which you desire in your life.

Calligraphy Fonts by Laura Worthington

I am a HUGE fan of Laura Worthington.  She’s a fabulous human being, as well as a top notch designer of beautiful calligraphy fonts.

As a gifted lettering artist and graphic designer she found her calling when she began designing type.

Her large selection of fonts can be found on Best Sellers lists all over the web and a large number have earned the honor of Rising Star and the Most Popular fonts annual list.

She has also had the honor of being interviewed as one of Myfonts “Creative Characters.” I can only dream:)

Feast your eyes on just a handful of her cursive fonts starting with “Funkydori”.

“Funkydori” was selected as one of the Most Popular fonts of 2012 on Myfonts.com.

I love the overall weight of it and the thick swashes that add plenty of “funk”.  It’s cool without trying to be.

Gioviale, moves and sways with ease.

Hummingbird feels like a light garden breeze.

And Samantha Script feels like a classic script with a touch of whimsy.

More of her script fonts include Alana and Origins, which was one of her first fonts.

Any of these would be great choices for invitations depending on the style you want to evoke.

and her latest release, Mandevilla which is currently on sale. Get all three weights for the price of one!

Because of Laura’s encouragement, I felt confident enough to begin the process of creating my own fonts.

I have two so far, Belluccia and Dom Loves Mary and am working on my next one. I LOVE designing my very own alphabets and hope to release several more this year.

I owe her a debt of gratitude for inspiring me to keep moving forward on this exciting journey.

Calligraphy on Texas place cards for American Heart Luncheon

I had the pleasure of hand lettering these place cards for a luncheon hosted by  The American Heart Association on Friday, February 1.

It was to celebrate their “Go Red for Women” campaign.  The keynote speaker was former first lady, Laura Bush.

Also attending were some of Dallas’s loveliest ladies!

Go Red For Women® celebrates the energy, passion and power we have as women to band together to wipe out heart disease and stroke.
