DIY Flower Table Number Tutorial

This DIY flower table number tutorial will take you step by step through the process of creating these floral cards for your table.

These were just my small contribution to a big Dallas wedding planned by Colin Cowie of Oprah fame.

Once again, DFW Events, the impeccable party planner, was the local coordinator.

The bride loved magnolias so they were a featured part of the event.

The wedding colors included both gold and silver paired with this beautiful green.

So I created a special mix of both metallics to hand illustrate the magnolia in back of the numbers, which were done in an off white.

Of course the numbers were brush lettered by hand but I’m going to let you know how you can create these even if you aren’t a lettering artist.

DIY Wedding, DIY Table Number tutorial, DIY Table Number, Flower Table Number, Calligraphy on Table Numbers, Calligraphy, Calligraphy fonts, Wedding fonts, wedding signs

Your going to use the same process for both the numbers and the flowers.

If you’re a lettering artist, use a flat brush and gouache paint to letter the numbers.  I used a  1/4″ Scepter Gold II brush and a guide ( see in pic below) to help me center the numbers.

DIY Wedding, DIY Table Number tutorial, DIY Table Number, Flower Table Number, Calligraphy on Table Numbers, Calligraphy, Calligraphy fonts, Wedding fonts, wedding signs

If your not a lettering artist,  find numbers you like from a favorite font.  Size them up on the computer so they will fit nicely in the center of your paper.

Print and trace onto tracing paper.

These cards are 6″ square heavy card stock provided by the client.

If you want double sided cards, I suggest making two separate sides and adhering them with double sided tape so they will be stiffer and stand up better.

DIY Wedding, DIY Table Number tutorial, DIY Table Number, Flower Table Number, Calligraphy on Table Numbers, Calligraphy, Calligraphy fonts, Wedding fonts, wedding signs.

Next use transfer paper ( I used white since I had dark paper) and LIGHTLY outline the numbers onto the card stock using a pencil or stylus, as shown in the pic. (Available at any craft store.)

You can use the guide as seen in one of the pics above for centering.

Fill in numbers with gouache paint ( water based paint found at art stores) acrylic paint or paint pens.

DIY Wedding, DIY Table Number tutorial, DIY Table Number, Flower Table Number, Calligraphy on Table Numbers, Calligraphy, Calligraphy fonts, Wedding fonts, wedding signs

Now do the same thing for the flower of your choice.  Find a picture of one you like on the internet,  ( There’s lots of sites about flowers that you can use so you don’t end up with copyrighted material.)

Download it, size it on your computer , print it and put it on tracing paper.  Or you might find a picture you like in a gardening magazine or the garden section of the newspaper.

Make sure to line the flower up over the number before inserting the transfer paper in between and LIGHTLY tracing.

Here’s an important note: Transfer paper has a wax like substance to it, so when you trace it onto the card be sure not to trace on top of the numbers.

Otherwise, you’ll end up with lines on the numbers that will not erase.

With a round brush ( You can get an inexpensive one like the Loew-Cornell Soft Comfort 14000 Round at JoAnn fabrics) brush over the traced lines of the flower with whatever color you desire.

Again goache or acrylic paint will work. If you want a finer line, or don’t want to mess with a brush, try a paint pen.

The gold and silver I used was a combination of gold gouache with gold and silver Schmincke brand powders mixed together.

Even if you just create them for the bridal table, it will add a beautiful look to your table!

I’m almost done with the hand lettering part of my new calligraphy font. Excited to get to the next part- digitizing!

DIY Personalized Pumpkin

DIY Halloween pumpkin,Halloween decor, decorated pumkin, personalized Halloween pumkinHere’s an quick idea for a DIY personalized pumpkin.  All the supplies are available at any craft store.

DIY Halloween pumpkin,Halloween decor, decorated pumkin, personalized Halloween pumkin

You’ll need: A pumpkin, a glue gun, 3 different sized ribbons, ( it helps if the largest ribbon is wired) fake spider web, fake spiders, black gloss acrylic paint and brush ( an inexpensive option is the Loew-Cornell Soft Comfort #14360 Liner in Size 1 or larger)  or a sharpie marker.

1. The first step is to put the initial on the pumpkin.  This can be done with the gloss acrylic paint and brush or the sharpie marker.  It helps to first draw the letter on the pumpkin with a pencil.  The line will be very light but it will help guide you.

If you are using a sharpie marker, you’ll need to fill in the areas where you have the thickest strokes.  Depending on what brush you use you may also need to add more width to parts of the letters that need it ( usually the  “down” strokes are the weighted strokes).

2. Next you’re going to attached the ribbons, starting with the widest wired one at the bottom.  The length of ribbon will depend on the size of the pumpkin, but it’s always best to make it longer as it’s easy to cut it if needed. I’d start with a minimum of 12″ for a small pumpkin.

Simply tie in a knot around the pumpkin staff. Don’t tie in a bow. Bend the wired ribbon so that it moves in a wave extending out from the pumpkin.  This will help hold your spider web in place.

3. Add additional ribbons in thinner widths. As you tie each ribbon around the pumpkin staff, adhere it to the one below with a glue gun so they all stay in place. Then make a bow. As you go to glue the last ribbon, make sure to turn it so that when you make a bow, it doesn’t rest exactly on top of the other bow, but fits nicely beside it.

4. Now it’s time to add the spider webbing.  Cut a piece and place it over the pumpkin staff.  Stretch it so it covers and sticks to the wired ribbon.  You can play around with it a bit perhaps sticking it through the holes of the bows.

5. Glue the spider to the middles of all the bows.  You can also add a few more spiders to other parts of the web.  Attach with a small dab of  the glue gun so they stay in place.

In addition to decor for your home, this would be a good craft for kids ( younger ones may need you to make the letter) or a great hostess gift if you’re going to a Halloween party !

Happy Pumpkin making!

DIY Charm Seating Chart

I’m excited to share this DIY charm seating chart with you.  It’s such a unique idea!  I comes from the creative mind of a bride whose wedding was featured on the Wedding Chicks blog. The photos are by Daniel Kim Photography.

Seating Chart, Wedding seating chart, key seating chart, unique seating chart

DIY wedding project, seating chart, seating cards, diy wedding

This is definitely only for a very small wedding as it would be too confusing for a large group.

1. First you will need a shadow box. ( Save your coupons and get one at your local craft store for 40% off.) If you can’t find one in white, you can easily paint it.

2. Next you’ll need to purchase some old fashioned key charms or other type charm.  I’ve seen some online but you can find an assortment of metal charms at a local craft store .

You’ll need matching sets of charms equal to the number of people attending.

3. Attach a patterned or solid paper or fabric to the inside of the box. Easily done with double stick tape.

4. Attach cup hooks appropriately spaced ( remember you will have to leave room for the charms to hang).  Leave room for the sign in the middle letting them know to “Find your match, to find your seat”. Hang the charms.

(I changed the wording to better fit the option of using more than just keys. Another wording option might be “We’re charmed you’re here! Find your match to find your seat.”)

5. Attachthe “matching” charm to decorated tags with the guests name and table.

That’s it.

A simple, sweet detail to add to an intimate wedding.

If you did this for a bridal shower, you could have everyone place their charm in a bowl and use it to pic winners for the door prizes.

Send pics if you decide to create one for your event!

Best,

Debi

DIY Decorated Mason Jars

Today I’m sharing instructions for DIY decorated mason jars. They make an easy and inexpensive party or wedding decoration.

decorative mason jar, mason jar candle holder, mason jars for weddings, lace srapped mason jar, diy wedding center pieces

The bride whose outdoor wedding was featured on this Wedding Chicks blog post was smart to collect them from family and  friends.

This gave her an assortment of types and sizes.  The two seen here are decorated with lace, raffia, ribbon and a fresh flower and are used as candle holders.

You can also paint the insides in a bold color.  This pic is from Joy’s Hope.  She lists Rustoleum Ultra Cover as her paint of choice.

mason jars, decorated mason jars, mason jar candle holders, painted mason jars, diy weddingThis pic from apartment therapy shows how white painted jars look with a candle inside.

Take a look at what you already have in your scrap booking supplies.

Lace? Patterned paper? Decorative stickers? Acrylic Rhinestones and Gems ? Decorative Tapes? The options are endless!

Basically, you just need to adhere whatever material your using to the outside of the jar.

Tie it or use adhesive spray.

Add sand inside to set the candle on and you’ve got an inexpensive, unique item for your wedding.

Group them together on a dessert table, guest sign in table or use separately as part of a simple centerpiece.

I’d love to see pics of what you create!

Debi

DIY Wedding Banner Instructions

In today’s post I’m sharing DIY wedding banner instructions.  The original post on the Wedding Chicks blog had so many darling details. These burlap banners really caught my eye.

So I thought I’d create some how to instructions for this and some other DIY items that I saw in this post. Today, I’ll start with the decorative burlap banner.

By the way all the beautiful photography is by Daniel Kim Photography.

just married sign, burlap wedding sign, diy wedding sign

This couple used burlap banners in a variety of places that really added a sweet touch to the outdoor scene.

diy wedding banner, burlap banner, love bannerThey may have purchased these from an Etsy shop but here’s my thought on how to make these easily and inexpensively.

burlap banner with hearts., diy burlap banner instrutcions

1. Cut burlap in the triangular or square shapes in the size you want.  Make sure they are wide and long enough to accommodate the size letters you want with extra room at the top ( 2-3″) to fold over the twine rope for hanging the banner.

Burlap comes in a variety of colors so you can even coordinate with your wedding colors.

2. Purchase  stencils or create your own by printing the letters you need from a font you like at the size needed.

( The one above is a free one I found online. Feel free to download it. )

3. Print final size you want on card stock or .003 acetate. Then cut out with an x-acto knife. (Createforless.com– 26.00 for a pack of 100 sheets of .003 acetate or check your local office supply store.)

4. Once you have your stencils cut, position them on the banner flags . I would put a light coating of a removable spray adhesive on the back on the stencil so the edges stay down and you get a clean line.  You could also try a glue stick in a few strategic places. Try this out first to make sure the stencil comes off easily.

5. Cover any area you don’t want painted.  Newspaper is always handy for this.  You can either use spray paint or brush on acrylic paint. These can be purchased at any craft store.

Remember to brush from the outside of the stencil into the center so the paint doesn’t get under the stencil.

6. Once the flags are dry, space them appropriately on a piece of twine leaving 3′ on either end for hanging. You might use clothespins to temporarily pin them in place.

7. Fold the top 2-3″ of the flags over the twine and adhere or sew in either a thread color to match the burlap or a color to match the lettering. Make sure the flag hugs the twine tightly so it won’t move around.

( Some options for adhesives: “Liquid thread”fabric glue or “Aleene’s fabric bond”)

That should do it!

I’ll be trying this out myself and offering the result as a giveaway on this blog in the next few weeks.

I’m taking suggestions for the wording.  “Just Married” ,”To have and to hold”?  What word/s would you like to see?

The next post will feature DIY mason jars.

Best,

Debi

Chic Backyard Girls Gathering

I just returned from a wonderful visit to my hometown of Erie, Pa.  One of my oldest friends, Bev Verbeke, who also happens to be a fabulous graphic designer, hosted a lovely girls gathering in her charming, beautifully landscaped backyard.

Those attending were my three sisters, niece and great niece.  The “tiki hut” (minus the actual tiki torches) was the perfect setting to dine, relax and catch up.

The yummy buffet was easy peasy take out from a local grocery store.

Niece DeAnna prepares delicious “Creamsicles”.

The side garage door gets a grand entrance treatment with this metal trellis, natural wreath, deocrative terra cotta suns and stone foot path.

Even the side garage window houses a garden pot, shutters and lovely lilies below.

Flowering garden pots, another decorative sun and a watering can provide a beautiful feast for the eyes at the back door.

The other side of the back door provides a welcome place to sit and enjoy the view.  Another sun, more potted plants and watering can continue the outdoor theme. Oh and note the color of the chair pads too!

Not only is the decor fabulous but her plants and flowers provide the perfect setting. Gorgeous hydrangeas in the most delicious color!

Lush ferns.

Birdbath with succulents.

The front of the house is the perfect charming cottage look. Isn’t it so inviting? And the outside of her house isn’t the only uniquely designed space. Every where you look in her home, form, function and great design are evident.

A peek inside…through the mustard yellow back door…reveals a sweet touch…a welcome sign created with my Belluccia font!  Bev admits to seeing this idea previously on my blog and has been delighting her guests ever since:)  Love that.

Notice the colors of the couch in the sun porch match the outside and inside color scheme of the house and yard.  The girl does not miss a trick.

Another idea from my blog that Bev expanded on was using a chalkboard to let your guests know the schedule for the day.  I don’t think she planned it but her outfit even matches the clock on the wall, which is, like every functional thing in her house, also well designed.

A gift from a friend, this fab light hangs over her kitchen table.  Again the mustard yellow is used in the kitchen making everything, including this cool print, pop.

You’ll be seeing some of Bev’s graphic design work in an upcoming post.

And I’m pleased to say we are having some chats about collaborating on some projects.

In the meantime, thanks BK, for a lovely evening and letting me share your darling abode with my readers!

Once the weather cools a bit, I’ll be looking to purchase a “tiki hut” of my own for a future girls night in Dallas.

What other gatherings might fit this theme?  A bridesmaid luncheon?  Or use several tents for a bridal or baby shower?

Cruise themed invitation

How fun is this ??…an invitation to spend a weekend on a private yacht bound for Exuma, an island in the Bahamas.  Oh and you’ll be going to your yacht’s destination by private jet.  Yes, I think I’d be accepting the invitation that five lucky couples received by hand delivery last week.

Once again I had the opportunity to work with the always clever and creative Mary Frances Hurt and Mindy Rives of DFW Events to help create these 3 D invites.  When I see their names on the caller ID, I know it’s going to be a fun project.

For my part, I hand lettered “EXUMA BOUND” on the masks that were placed in the treasure chest.  I also created the background printed piece that fit inside the top of the lid.  Barbie and Ken, anxious to “bust out” of their confined spaces, decide on a quick trip to the Bahamas.  Oh if real life were only that easy:)

Any fun plans for the summer?

Do share in the comments !

Best,

Debi

DFW Events in D Weddings Magazine

Congrats to DFW Events who has several of the beautiful weddings they coordinated featured in the latest issuue of D Wedding Magazine! Check out all the great detailst here.

On another page sits the creative table top design inspired by the life and art of Frida Kahlo.  I was so excited to contribute to this effort as I knew they would do something very cool.

When they asked me to do the lettering for the lace covered menus and terra cotta pot place cards, I was curious to see what they would do with them.  They did not dissappoint!

Here’s how they looked in my studio.

I added the lettering to these teal colored menus that were inserted into beautiful lace covers.  What a unique idea!  The  yellow flower placed on the plate added a nice pop of color.  A small detail that adds alot.  hand lettering, terra potta pot place cards, createive place card ideas, calligraphy on clay pots, Belluccia lettering

The terra cotta pots that served as place cards were filled with limes and a small dark pink rose.  How creative!  The overall look is festive and totally fitting as a tribute to the colorful artisit.

The gals at DFW Events never cease to amaze me with the great details they put into every event. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of it!
