The two rattles represent the twins  (a boy and a girl) that will be arriving soon:)

The precious rattle invitation is by Stevie Streck Designs. My part was to design, create and address all the boxes.

The rhinestone “B” is for the parents to be’s last name.

Each box was addressed in hand lettering with a “Once upon a time…” banner to reflect the theme.

Adding a touch of “stickles” gave it just enough sparkle.

Personalized tags (in my Dom Loves Mary font and Belluccia font borders) let the guests know that a donation was being made “in honor of our guests and our little ones” to the Genesis Women’s Shelter.

What a lovely gesture by the hostess!

UPDATE

I have received many calls and e-mails from people interested in having me create these invitations for them.

This is an extremely labor intensive project.

Since I am focusing more on font design, I’m not taking on large projects like this.

I’d be happy to instruct you on how to make the decorated boxes yourself, if you are so inclined.

The boxes came from Uline. The material can be purchased at any fabric store.

The ribbon and rhinestone letter came from Hobby Lobby.

Please note, I did not create the invitation.  It was ordered by the client from Beeyond Paper

The double rattle invitation pictured above is no longer available.

The single rattle is available. So you could order both blue and pink and put them together in the box.

Hope this helps!

Still have my nose to the light table creating my new calligraphy font.

Calligraphy Fonts by Laura Worthington

I am a HUGE fan of Laura Worthington.  She’s a fabulous human being, as well as a top notch designer of beautiful calligraphy fonts.

As a gifted lettering artist and graphic designer she found her calling when she began designing type.

Her large selection of fonts can be found on Best Sellers lists all over the web and a large number have earned the honor of Rising Star and the Most Popular fonts annual list.

She has also had the honor of being interviewed as one of Myfonts “Creative Characters.” I can only dream:)

Feast your eyes on just a handful of her cursive fonts starting with “Funkydori”.

“Funkydori” was selected as one of the Most Popular fonts of 2012 on Myfonts.com.

I love the overall weight of it and the thick swashes that add plenty of “funk”.  It’s cool without trying to be.

Because of Laura’s encouragement, I felt confident enough to begin the process of creating my own fonts.

I have two so far, Belluccia and Dom Loves Mary and am working on my next one. I LOVE designing my very own alphabets and hope to release several more this year.

I owe her a debt of gratitude for inspiring me to keep moving forward on this exciting journey.

She’s who I wanna be when I grow up:)

Simple Country Chic Wedding invitation

I love how my cursive font, Belluccia, was used in this simple country chic wedding invitation.

The small hand tag attached to the couple’s photo greets guest with the sweetest saying, “all the best things are wild and free.”

The use of Belluccia in lower case and the white, yellow and kraft papers keep the look modern and country chic.

And don’t we just love the little feather and the twine!

I just adore the boots and old fashion camera illustrations. The boot illustration is from Shannon Parish.

The camera is from iStock.com.

This fab invitation suite was designed by Tara Tallman Sollman (at Firebrand Tribe). Photographs by Jessica Ames.

Thanks Tara! You do Belluccia proud!

Have a Massive Monday!

Table Numbers and Place Cards in Calligraphy fonts

I was creating some samples for a potential client and thought I’d share these Table Numbers and Place Cards in my calligraphy fonts.

In the pic above I used my cursive font, Dom Loves Mary Stylistic version.  The flourish on the capital T was created using a flourish from the Dom Loves Mary Flourishes Two set.

I used Dom Loves Mary text font for  “TABLE 12” on the place card.

That’s why I created them!

Ciera Designs creates Chalkboard Sign

Today I want to introduce you to Ciera Holzenthal of  CieraDesign.com.

I came across her blog/design studio by chance and just loved everything I saw and read!

She is not only a great blogger but a very talented graphic designer.

Her services include: logo identity, invitations, editorial, business cards, brochures, WordPress, posters and more!

She recently created this lovely graphic using my Dom Loves Mary font family and has graciously allowed me to share it.

Dom Loves Mary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

She used a combination of the three Dom Loves Mary Script fonts for the wording.

(You get all three in the Pro package.)

The capital N is from the Stylistic version, while most of the lower case letters are from the Contextual version.

To encapsulate the saying, she chose two simple flourishes. The top one comes from my Flourishes One set, while the bottom is from the Flourishes Two set.

I’m guessing she was able to find the chalkboard background online like this free one.

You can refer to my previous post here and here on how to add flourishes to your design and create a great saying of your own!

Did you know the Dom Loves Mary Text looks really cool all on it’s own?  Here it’s used to tell a “Once upon a time” love story.

Dom Loves Mary  is now #9 on the Hot New Fonts list  (thanks!!) and is available at: Correspondence Ink Type foundry .

How to: Dom Loves Mary font ADD ONS and Flourishes tutorial

I’ve created another tutorial:)

In this “How to” I cover the use of some of the Dom Loves Mary font ADD ON’s  and ORNAMENTAL FLOURISHES to spice up your design.

Before I get to it, I wanted to send a shout out of thanks to Lettering Time blog for featuring my new cursive font, Dom Loves Mary.

It’s always lovely to see a posting about my work.  But to see it on a blog from Spain was really cool!  Muchas Gracias!

Today’s tutorial will feature an invitation design by Nessa Sander of Cardgirl Invitations.

In this fun invitation, she incorporated some of the words from my Dom Loves Mary ADD ON package ( “and”, “RSVP”).

She also added an ornamental flourish from the Dom Loves Mary Stylistic version of the font and used the same version for the words “dress to kill”.

I specifically created the ADD ON’s (66  commonly used words for invitations and stationery products) for use with, not only my calligraphy fonts, but with fonts you already own.

So I was excited to see that Nessa had done just that in this invitation.

Now on with the show and tell.

(I tried to share more details for beginners so feel free to fast forward through those parts:)

Thanks to everyone for the great feedback on the last one.

It’s helping me improve!

Please share your thoughts on this one as well.

Best,

Debi

Halloween Invitation and Party Game

Halloween invitation, Halloween cookies, toy wooden coffin, spooky hand lettering, calligraphy

This Halloween invitation and party game were so much fun to create!  First here’s the details about the invites.

They were made for my client’s daughter’s Halloween themed birthday bash. It would also make a great party favor.

Halloween invitation, Halloween cookies, toy wooden coffin, spooky hand lettering, calligraphy

The darling and delicious mummy cookies were made by “It’s a Mary Cake”.  You could also fill the coffin with Halloween candy.

Here’s some basic DIY instructions.

The wooden coffin’s came from Michael’s craft store.  They were painted black.  The message was lettered in white on black card stock cut in the shape of the coffin lid and attached.

You could do this with a white chalk or paint marker or white pen.

Halloween invitations, Halloween calligraphy, hand lettering, mummy invitations, calligraphy on invitations

They were mailed in “mummified” boxes ( I painted the look of fabric strips in gray.)  with addresses hand lettered in orange paint. Again, orange and gray markers could be used.

The coffin was placed inside a white mailing box where an orange card with party details was attached.

When the box was opened it revealed a “web” with spiders guarding the coffin:) Any craft store has theme items.

Halloween invitation, Halloween cookies, toy wooden coffin, spooky hand lettering, calligraphy

More spiders and a fake eyeball were hidden in the paper shredding.  Other items could include plastic worms and bugs!

Hope you like this fun invitation idea.

Now for the game….

A Mummy Scavenger Hunt Party Game:

1. Divide the party guests into teams.

2. Each team will create a “mummy.”  They can trace one of their bodies on a large piece of white roll paper.  Or you could opt to have them draw the outline of a mummy on a piece of poster board.

3. One or two guests  are designated as the mummy reviver.  The others go out on the scavenger hunt looking for their mummy’s parts. ( Just hidden in your yard will work.)

All of the mummy parts can be placed in plastic bags with a piece of colored paper inside. The teams would retrieve only the color assigned to their mummy.

The items can include body parts like eyes, heart, fingers, liver, etc… whatever can be found cheaply at places like the dollar store or printed from clip art and cut out of card stock.

4. Each time an item on the scavenger list is retrieved, the team receives a piece of white crepe paper to dress their mummy with. The mummy revivers re-attach the body parts along with the white crepe paper.  ( Double stick tape should work.)

5. As the teams complete their mummy they are awarded prizes for first, second, third…place.

Simple prizes could include inexpensive items like:  hanging spiders, red wax lips, fake dracula teeth, etc…or just bags of Halloween candy.

Let me know if you try this game and how it worked out.

Hope this gets you in the Halloween spirit!

Hand Lettered Momento for New Baby

I’m excited to share the process of how I created this hand lettered memento for a friend’s new baby. In a former post, I shared my version of this project for my nephew’s wedding.  I promised to show the step by step so here it is.

These instructions are for people who are comfortable with lettering with a brush. This requires hand lettering skills that you may not have.  So another idea is to create it on the computer using different fonts.  Then using a light table and a light colored paper, you can transfer the letters onto the paper and paint them in.

hand lettering, calligraphy, new baby memento, hand made baby gift

Step 1: Layout lettering design in pencil on 12″ x 12″ card stock ( available in any color in the scrap booking section at craft stores).  Be sure to measure out all the spaces for all the information you want to include beforehand.  Don’t forget to leave space for a border to allow for framing.

hand lettering, calligraphy, new baby memento, hand made baby giftStep 2: Mix up enough paint to letter the entire project.  I used gouache paint in a light pink on black paper for this project. Gouache is a water based paint available at craft and art stores.

hand lettering, calligraphy, new baby memento, hand made baby giftStep 3: Be sure to work from the top of the paper down to the bottom.  Keep another sheet of paper underneath your hand/arm so you don’t get oil from your skin on the paper.

hand lettering, calligraphy, new baby memento, hand made baby gift

Step 4: When you are completely finished, gently and carefully erase all the pencil lines with a “Magic Rub” eraser,  or something similar.  Hold the paper as you erase so it doesn’t crinkle up from too strong of a force.

There you have it.  Please know that this is a very labor intensive project so take your time.

This gift will be on it’s way to Meredith and Josh Budwin.  They are the proud new parents to Baby Sophie who is growing cuter every day !

Sweet DIY Baby Shower Invitation

Creating a sweet baby shower invitation can be simple and easy when you use ready made products.

Belluccia font, Calligraphy font, hand lettered font, cursive font, fancy font, wedding font, script font, pink baby shower invitation, This one, made by my friend and talented hostess Kim Levine, is a perfect example!

Designed with my calligraphy font, Belluccia, this cute invite was created by printing on pre-styled cards. You can find a huge assortment of these at any craft or stationary store.

This particular one features pink, brown and white polka dots with a sweet scalloped bottom edge.  To add interest, she simply punched holes at the top and tied a matching ribbon and “It’s a girl” tag.  ( Also available at craft stores.)  Use a pink marker to address the envelopes and you are done!

Remember there’s only two more days to take advantage of the Thumb Tree Print Give Away !  See yesterday’s post for all the details.

Creative DIY Save the Date

You may remember the modern chevron designed wedding invitation that I posted previously.  Well when I saw the Save the Date that had been sent for the same wedding, I thought it was such a darling idea I asked the bride if I could post it.

She was more than happy to share.

DIY Save the Date invitation, Rustic Wedding Invitation, Rustic Save the Date Invitation, DIY Wedding Invitation

Taylor, the bride, found an old window pane and lettered “Save The Date” in the top three panes.  This can be done with either a chalk marker or acrylic paint.  She used the bottom three windows to put the numerical date.  The numbers are cut out and backed with newspaper to go along with the rustic feel.

They found a great weathered red barn as a backdrop.  A picture was snapped.  They selected a casual font (available where they had the pictures printed) and then used the 4″ x 6″ pics as the actual Save the Date.  Though they used white envelopes, another option would be to use red, blue or spring green.  Then use a gel pen in a contrasting color to address them.

This is a great example of a creative invitation that is economical too!

Way to go Taylor!  And Happy Wedding to you, Jacob and your families.
