DIY Flower Table Number Tutorial

This DIY flower table number tutorial will take you step by step through the process of creating these floral cards for your table.

DIY Wedding, DIY Table Number tutorial, DIY Table Number, Flower Table Number, Calligraphy on Table Numbers, Calligraphy, Calligraphy fonts, Wedding fonts, wedding signs

These were just my small contribution to a big Dallas wedding planned by Colin Cowie of Oprah fame.

Once again, DFW Events, the impeccable party planner, was the local coordinator.

DIY Wedding, DIY Table Number tutorial, DIY Table Number, Flower Table Number, Calligraphy on Table Numbers, Calligraphy, Calligraphy fonts, Wedding fonts, wedding signs

The bride loved magnolias so they were a featured part of the event.

The wedding colors included both gold and silver paired with this beautiful green.

So I created a special mix of both metallics to hand illustrate the magnolia in back of the numbers, which were done in an off white.

Of course the numbers were brush lettered by hand but I’m going to let you know how you can create these even if you aren’t a lettering artist.

DIY Wedding, DIY Table Number tutorial, DIY Table Number, Flower Table Number, Calligraphy on Table Numbers, Calligraphy, Calligraphy fonts, Wedding fonts, wedding signs

Your going to use the same process for both the numbers and the flowers.

If you’re a lettering artist, use a flat brush and gouache paint to letter the numbers.  I used a  1/4″ Scepter Gold II brush and a guide ( see in pic below) to help me center the numbers.

DIY Wedding, DIY Table Number tutorial, DIY Table Number, Flower Table Number, Calligraphy on Table Numbers, Calligraphy, Calligraphy fonts, Wedding fonts, wedding signs

If your not a lettering artist,  find numbers you like from a favorite font.  Size them up on the computer so they will fit nicely in the center of your paper.

Print and trace onto tracing paper.

These cards are 6″ square heavy card stock provided by the client.

If you want double sided cards, I suggest making two separate sides and adhering them with double sided tape so they will be stiffer and stand up better.

DIY Wedding, DIY Table Number tutorial, DIY Table Number, Flower Table Number, Calligraphy on Table Numbers, Calligraphy, Calligraphy fonts, Wedding fonts, wedding signs.

Next use transfer paper ( I used white since I had dark paper) and LIGHTLY outline the numbers onto the card stock using a pencil or stylus, as shown in the pic. (Available at any craft store.)

You can use the guide as seen in one of the pics above for centering.

Fill in numbers with gouache paint ( water based paint found at art stores) acrylic paint or paint pens.

DIY Wedding, DIY Table Number tutorial, DIY Table Number, Flower Table Number, Calligraphy on Table Numbers, Calligraphy, Calligraphy fonts, Wedding fonts, wedding signs

Now do the same thing for the flower of your choice.  Find a picture of one you like on the internet,  ( There’s lots of sites about flowers that you can use so you don’t end up with copyrighted material.)

Download it, size it on your computer , print it and put it on tracing paper.  Or you might find a picture you like in a gardening magazine or the garden section of the newspaper.

Make sure to line the flower up over the number before inserting the transfer paper in between and LIGHTLY tracing.

Here’s an important note: Transfer paper has a wax like substance to it, so when you trace it onto the card be sure not to trace on top of the numbers.

Otherwise, you’ll end up with lines on the numbers that will not erase.

With a round brush ( You can get an inexpensive one like the Loew-Cornell Soft Comfort 14000 Round at JoAnn fabrics) brush over the traced lines of the flower with whatever color you desire.

Again goache or acrylic paint will work. If you want a finer line, or don’t want to mess with a brush, try a paint pen.

The gold and silver I used was a combination of gold gouache with gold and silver Schmincke brand powders mixed together.

Even if you just create them for the bridal table, it will add a beautiful look to your table!

I’m almost done with the hand lettering part of my new calligraphy font. Excited to get to the next part- digitizing!

The two rattles represent the twins  (a boy and a girl) that will be arriving soon:)

The precious rattle invitation is by Stevie Streck Designs. My part was to design, create and address all the boxes.

The rhinestone “B” is for the parents to be’s last name.

Personalized tags (in my Dom Loves Mary font and Belluccia font borders) let the guests know that a donation was being made “in honor of our guests and our little ones” to the Genesis Women’s Shelter.

What a lovely gesture by the hostess!

UPDATE

I have received many calls and e-mails from people interested in having me create these invitations for them.

This is an extremely labor intensive project.

Since I am focusing more on font design, I’m not taking on large projects like this.

I’d be happy to instruct you on how to make the decorated boxes yourself, if you are so inclined.

The boxes came from Uline. The material can be purchased at any fabric store.

The ribbon and rhinestone letter came from Hobby Lobby.

Please note, I did not create the invitation.  It was ordered by the client from Beeyond Paper

The double rattle invitation pictured above is no longer available.

The single rattle is available. So you could order both blue and pink and put them together in the box.

Hope this helps!

Still have my nose to the light table creating my new calligraphy font.

Calligraphy featured in Reverie Magazine Spring 2012

Reverie Spring Issue 2012

Rêverie Spring Issue 2012

This morning, I checked out the interview London based Rêverie magazine conducted with the incredibly talented scribe Paul Antonio. ( Pages 260-267)
His lettering is also included in the pics from the magazines launch party.  Drooled over the incredible mirrors!  (Pages 274-279)

His work is simply stunning!  His clients include the Royal Family and Stella McCartney.

I must say I was envious of all of the extensive study he’s had the opportunity to do including copying hieroglyphs in a pyramid in Egypt for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  How fabulous it that!

Then I started flipping  through the pages of this beautiful online magazine.  Tastefully done and great “Lookbooks” of real weddings that you can download and print from their blog!
I was even more thrilled when I  came across several pages where my cursive font Belluccia was used.
Here’s a sample of one of the Lookbooks from a wedding fiesta that took place in Mexico.  My calligraphy font went perfectly with the flavor of the wedding!
Reverie Magazine Lookbook – Spring 2012 – Aaron Delesie
Then on page 233-234 I saw a lovely invitation suite that was created by Kate of Coquette Paper & Press featuring Belluccia!  Love it!
Check it all out here:
Congrats to Mary and Kate, founders of Rêverie, on this spectacular issue!  And thanks for using Belluccia:)

7 Calligraphy Styled Wedding Fonts

Christy Toney of CT Designs Inc. included Belluccia on her list of wedding fonts designed to mimic hand lettering.  Thanks Christy! The list includes a great variety of looks.  Another on the list “Origins”, was created by the very talented Laura Worthington.

If you’re thinking of creating your own DIY wedding invitation, a cursive font can add a unique touch.  Whether it’s a simple outdoor event or a more formal affair, fonts that mimic the look of a professional calligrapher add a lovely personal touch.

Christy gives lots of great tips on her blog.  I especially love her post about wedding table numbers.  Lots of great ideas!  Some that you can make yourself.  Check them out.

On Saturday, March 10, I’ll be teaching my “Intro to Calligraphy” workshop at Paper Source in North Park Center.  If you’re out shopping be sure to come in and take a peek at what we’re doing!

Have a great weekend!

Cursive font for DIY Invitations

This video was shot when I first released my cursive font, Belluccia, last June.  I finally got the DVD converted and uploaded to youtube.  It was filmed on the spot, when I was in Michigan taping a segment for the Eight West morning show so I’m talking off the cuff and rather awkwardly at that.  I seem to stutter in lots of places.

But at least it was a good hair day:)

I’m thrilled to say that since this was made Belluccia has remained on the Best Sellers list.  It made the Rising Stars List in July of 2011 and recently was honored as one of the Most Popular Fonts of 2011 on myfonts.com.

It’s been featured on many Wedding Invitations created by talented designers.  Thanks to all who have used it in so many creative ways!  You’ve helped make my visions  of it come to life.

I’m still struggling to balance my regular work schedule with the creation of my second font, but it is slowly coming along!

Coco Chanel inspired calligraphy for DFW Events and Brides of North Texas Magazine

I was thrilled to be selected as one of the vendors for DFW Events magazine spread in The Brides of North Texas latest issue hitting news stands August 9!

First here’s a peek at the “Inside the Inspiration” video created by BEYOND.

Brides of North Texas /DFW Events CoCo Chanel photo shoot

Now here’s my pics of the pieces while they were still in my studio. ( not as good as professional but they’ll do in a pinch:)

Pink and black invitation and envelope for Coco Chanel shootThe invitation and envelope were designed to work with the striking pink and black theme.  I chose a non-traditional script in all lower case that, like Coco, breaks some of the rules:)  I always love to use an ampersand as a design element. In this case, it’s done in white to add a little more interest to the envelope.

French saying around edge of glass charger plate, "merci" card

I loved the idea of using actual french sayings about love to grace the plates.  In this pic, I used the lettering as a design element on the glass charger.  I also did several small signs that said “merci”.  The one they chose used pink shimmer card stock with black lettering. It was cut down and placed on the Chanel bottle in the video.  They also chose a name card using the same combination that was placed one of the favors-a bar of french soap.

I forgot the actual translation of this particular saying but I remember the thought being that when you love someone, instead of looking in the direction of each other, it’s better if you are both looking in the same direction to the future.  But don’t quote me on that:)

French saying brush lettering on plate

“The price of love is only love”.  A perfect sentiment for a wedding plate.  The lettering is done with a brush and gouache paint.  I’ve actually been meaning to experiment with doing it in permanent paint so it could be given as a gift  and used by the Bride and Groom at their recepetion.  ( And maybe for anniversary dinners !)

I will have to put that on my to do list:)

Table numbers for Coco Chanel shoot

Loved working with beads and wire to put together these table numbers.  A DIY post will follow soon!  The perfect choice for the photo shoot was “No.5” of course!

Je taime hand lettered on black plate in pink

The iconic “Je taime” ( I love you)  and the Eiffel tower were done in both pink on black and black on white, which is what they chose for the photo shoot.  This combination was the perfect fit for this occassion!

Quote by Coco Chanel

Last but not least, is a framed saying by Coco Chanel using my Belluccia calligraphy font!

brush lettered "enchante"

brush lettered "tres bien"

These are two of the plates that didn’t get used.  It’s always fun to see which items get chosen.

Merci Beaucoup! to DFW Events and Brides of North Texas Magazine for allowing me to be a part of this stunning issue !

Have a great saying to be permanently painted on a plate?  Let me know.  When I do my sample, I may end up using your saying and giving you the plate!

My calligraphy font Belluccia of the”Correspondence Ink” type foundry is still  #3 on the Best Sellers list on myfonts.com.   In addition it will soon also be sold on Fontbros.com. I’ll let you know when.

By the way, my next “Intro to Calligraphy” class will be held October 8 from 1-4 pm at Paper Source in North Park Center.  There is limited seating and the class fills up fast.  So get a spot now.  Call Paper Source at 214-696-4400.

Colorado Wedding Invitation Suite in Blush Pink

I was thrilled when I got the call from Colorado wedding planner Paige Goodson  to do custom calligraphy for one of her bridal clients. Paige was lovely to work with.  The distance between Texas and Colorado posed no problem. Between e-mails and chats on the phone we quickly narrowed down the look the bride wanted.

I created the invitation, RSVP card and return address using my Belluccia lettering style, which by now you know has been made into a font. ( http://new.myfonts.com/search/Bellucia/fonts/)

It was thermographed in olive green on a beautiful blush pink shimmer card stock.   A lighter blush pink moire paper is sandwhiched in between the top and bottom pieces of the invitation and serves as a lining for the envelope as well.

I addressed the envelopes in matching olive green using the Belluccia lettering style to complete the look of the suite.  I love when everything comes together and makes a bride so happy and excited to send out her invitations!

The added surprise in all of this is that the bride turned out to be the sister of a Allison Holmes, a Dallas resident and overall  lovely gal, who took my calligraphy class at the Paper Source store in January.

Well as the saying goes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.  The bride, Courtney was just as darling as her sis.

How do I know?  She just happened to be in town and so the three of us met for coffee in North Park Center after my last calligraphy class.

They were kind enough to meet me with my favorite after class treat already waiting for me.  ( An almond croissant and coffee from La Madeleine French Bakery & Cafe!)

I brought a few of the envelopes that I had addressed to give her a peek and she just about toppled the table over with excitement!

Now that is the reaction that every calligraphy loves:) When she found out a couple at the next table were also getting married she enthusiastically showed them my work.  Love that!

So many thanks to Courtney, Allison, Mom Nancy and Wedding Planner Paige for allowing me to play a small part in this wonderful event.  I hope we can meet again in Dallas or Colorado!

While it’s true I will never be the mother of the bride,  I get to play one in my work:)  How cool is that?!
