Hand Lettered Momento for New Baby

I’m excited to share the process of how I created this hand lettered memento for a friend’s new baby. In a former post, I shared my version of this project for my nephew’s wedding.  I promised to show the step by step so here it is.

These instructions are for people who are comfortable with lettering with a brush. This requires hand lettering skills that you may not have.  So another idea is to create it on the computer using different fonts.  Then using a light table and a light colored paper, you can transfer the letters onto the paper and paint them in.

hand lettering, calligraphy, new baby memento, hand made baby gift

Step 1: Layout lettering design in pencil on 12″ x 12″ card stock ( available in any color in the scrap booking section at craft stores).  Be sure to measure out all the spaces for all the information you want to include beforehand.  Don’t forget to leave space for a border to allow for framing.

hand lettering, calligraphy, new baby memento, hand made baby giftStep 2: Mix up enough paint to letter the entire project.  I used gouache paint in a light pink on black paper for this project. Gouache is a water based paint available at craft and art stores.

hand lettering, calligraphy, new baby memento, hand made baby giftStep 3: Be sure to work from the top of the paper down to the bottom.  Keep another sheet of paper underneath your hand/arm so you don’t get oil from your skin on the paper.

Step 4: When you are completely finished, gently and carefully erase all the pencil lines with a “Magic Rub” eraser,  or something similar.  Hold the paper as you erase so it doesn’t crinkle up from too strong of a force.

There you have it.  Please know that this is a very labor intensive project so take your time.

This gift will be on it’s way to Meredith and Josh Budwin.  They are the proud new parents to Baby Sophie who is growing cuter every day !

DIY Instructions for Personalized Wedding Dinner Plates

Just a quick post about some dinner plates I created for delightful Mom-of-the-Groom Wanda, for her son and new bride’s wedding.

Unfortunately I didn’t get better pics before she came to pick them up, but I wanted to share anyway.

Wedding dinner plates, Personalzied wedding plates, Hand lettering on plates, Calligraphy on Dinner Plates, Hand LetteringWedding dinner plates, Personalzied wedding plates, Hand lettering on plates, Calligraphy on Dinner Plates, Hand LetteringThe color scheme was charcoal and peach. A smooth flat surface is usually best but I managed to work with the ridges that were on the rim.

For those of you who don’t know the process, I’ll share.

First, you need to purchase paints made to go on ceramics. These can be found in any craft store. The brand I used is “Folkart Enamels”.

Next, you will need a decent brush for lettering and design. An inexpensive one can be found at JoAnn’s. It’s a Loew Cornell Soft comfort  brush.  The number for the one I used is 14360 Liner. There are different sizes depending on how large or small you want to paint.

If you don’t feel comfortable lettering a name, consider just painting a design in multi-colors.

Whatever you paint, a second coat will be needed to create an opaque look.

After drying for 24 hours, put the plates into a cool oven and set for 350 degrees baking for 30 minutes.  It’s important to let them cool down in the oven so they don’t crack.

Even though the paint is baked on, they will still need to be hand washed (no dishwasher) after use.

This project can be time intensive, but makes a unique personalized gift for any bride and groom.

I found out that Wanda had all kinds of creative ideas she came up with for her son’s wedding decor.  So I promise to share the pics she sends me in future posts.

All the best to the new Mr. and Mrs. Cullins!

Texas Tote for OOT Guest and Gift for Bridesmaids

Texas tote bag, OOT Bag idea, Texas Hand bag, Texas Purse, Lettering on Hand bagSpent a fun weekend with my two sisters and as usual, a trip to Sam Moon was in order.  If you don’t live in Texas and aren’t familiar with this “girl heaven” check out their online store.

While there, my younger sister, a true purse aficianado, found this darling patent leather Texas city themed tote for 10.99!  I think it would make a perfect Out of Town Guest bag for Texas brides.  It’s large enough to fit all the necessary items : water bottles, snack bars, local info, a wedding itinerary.  What a great gift for them to remember your wedding and the fabulous weekend!  You could also use it to present gifts to your bridesmaids. They could use it to keep essentials for the day of the wedding…makeup, jewelry, comfy shoes for dancing.  I tried to find it online but had no luck.  But if you live near any of these Texas cities; Dallas, Fort Worth, Frisco, Houston, Austin and the Woodlands, just check out your local Sam Moon!

Welcome Sign for Out of Town Guests

Welcome Sign for guest room

Have guests arriving? It’s always a nice idea to make them feel welcome in small ways.  This is the hand-lettered sign I made for Emily, our guest from last weekend.  For non-calligraphers, a beautiful font could be used. I think this would be a great idea to put in the hotel room for out-of-town wedding guests.  Perhaps include a small note tag suggesting they take it home and put a pic from the wedding in the frame. Or you can include a pic ( of the bride and groom or the guest at your wedding) in your thank you note to be put in the frame. Ask your photographer to get a pic of everyone as they arrive at the reception or get group shots at the tables.  Just one small way to make your out-of-town family and friends know how much you appreciate their presence:)

Texas ABC’s book in Calligraphy

I had the pleasure of contributing to Texas ABC’s A Book of All Things Texas that was assembled by Kaligrafos, The Dallas Calligraphy Society (of which I am a member).  Now that the book is available for purchase, I would love to give you a preview of the finished pages.

Kaligrafos, The Dallas Calligraphy Society is a non-profit organization that promotes calligraphy and related arts.  This book is a great way to introduce children to the arts and it would also make a great gift for a Texas friend. Check out their website if you would like to purchase the book or find out more about Kaligrafos.

Bride's Dress decorated cookies embossed and pearlized

Who doesn’t love a cookie??  Aren’t these beautiful bride’s dress cookies just gorgeous!  Mary, of “It’s a Mary Cake”, did a lovely job embossing and pearlizing these for a bridal shower for one of my clients.  The pink sash adds a nice pop of color and ties in with the ribbon and tag suggesting it was “Sweet of you to celebrate with Alicia.”  My Belluccia cursive font was used for the lettering on the tags.

I’m currently working with her on creating  bikini cookies for a beach themed boxed bachelorette invitation…can’t wait to show you those!

Hand lettering on wooden tray with DIY instructions

Hand lettering on wooden tray

wooden serving tray

Wooden serving tray

I recently hand lettered on the bottom of a wooden serving tray to serve as a gift to an outgoing president of a study group.  I worked with the colors on the front of the tray, lettering in a solid color then “antiqued” the letters by going over them with a  tinted “wash” of paint.  This is done using acrylic paint and a lettering brush then sealed with Clear Acrylic Matte Coating.

I think it would also be a great DIY project using paint pens.

Step 1: Find a simple block font and cursive font you like ( Belluccia comes to mind:).  Create the layout on the computer, then print it at the size needed.

Step 2: Use transfer paper, (white would be needed on a dark background) to trace the lettering onto the tray.  Make sure to line it up straight so it is parellell with the edges of the tray.

Step3: Next grab a sharpie paint pen in the chosen color and letter over the traced lines.

You’ve just created a pretty, personal and  practical gift!
