DIY Chalkboard Seating Chart

DIY Chalkboard Seating Chart, Chalkboard Signs, DIY Chalkboard Signs, DIY Seating Chart, Seating Chart, Wedding Signs, signs for weddingsChalkboard seating charts are very popular right now.  So I thought I’d share some I just completed and explain the process for those who’d like to DIY it.

It all starts with preparation.  For this project, there were actually 3 boards approximately 6′ x 3′.

They were made out of plywood and painted with chalkboard paint. (They were made by another company and delivered to my home studio.)

You can purchase plywood at Loew’s or Home Depot and have them cut them to the size you need.

The chalkboard paint for this project came from Loew’s. It’s made by Valspar.

The first step is measuring the space you have, allowing for room on the sides (these fit into custom made holders) and figuring out the height of the lettering and the spaces in between names as well as the space needed to accommodate two columns if needed.

For these boards, there were 216 names. The size for each name was 1″ and the spaces in between were .5″.

Next I designed the headers. Here’s a pic of one laid out on my light table. If you are not a lettering artist, you can use a font.  Just size it on your computer, print it out and trace it on the board. You can do the same with flourishes.

My Belluccia and Dom Loves Mary fonts can be used if you want a script font.  Both also have flourishing packages you can purchase separately as well if you want to combine with a font you already have.

DIY Chalkboard Seating Chart, Chalkboard Signs, DIY Chalkboard Signs, DIY Seating Chart, Seating Chart, Wedding Signs, Signs for weddings

The header is transferred onto the chalkboard with transfer paper in white. This can be purchased at any craft store. You can see in the pic that I created the lines and spaces using painters tape that I cut to be .5″.

This eliminates the need to erase lines as you will also spread the chalk marker paint as you erase.

Note: Try to find .5″ tape, masking or painter’s tape, to save time.  I found it after the fact at Uline.com. I did not find it at any local stores.

DIY Chalkboard Seating Chart, Chalkboard Signs, DIY Chalkboard Signs, DIY Seating Chart, Seating Chart, Wedding signs, signs for weddings

You can then go over the flourish and letters with a chalkboard paint marker.

The one I used was called  “Bistro Chalk Marker”.  It’s made by Marvy and can be found in single colors at Hobby Lobby.

If you make a mistake, be sure to wipe it off right away.  It says that it comes off when you want but that wasn’t my experience.

But if you wait too long and need to paint over to re-do it, be sure to wipe off as much as you can with a wet rag or else it will bleed into the paint.

A note to remember…if you are going to do the list alphabetically you are limited on making any last minute additions or changes.

I would suggest, unless you are totally sure about your guest list, to list by tables.  Even if you have to paint over a name, you have more flexibility.

Dom Loves Mary calligraphy font on Bridal Luncheon invite

I was thrilled to have the chance to play with my new “Dom Loves Mary” calligraphy font on this Bridal Luncheon invitation for a client of DFW Events!

I loved adding all the flourishes to the upper and lower case letters in the brides name.

The invitation, in hot pink and orange, was presented to the guests in a personalized champagne glass.  ( For some reason the hot pink turned more purple in this post:)

The younger flower girls who were attending the luncheon received flower cookies, made by “It’s a Mary Cake“, with their invitation attached.

A flower cookie favor was also placed at their table setting.

Thanks to all who have been loving Dom Loves Maryt just as much as I do.

It’s been so exciting to see my new cursive font move up the Hot New Fonts list to # 16!

And I know Dom and Mary would be thrilled too:)

Thanks to all for following the love story of my in-laws, Dominic and Mary Sementelli. I’m thrilled that my “Dom Loves Mary” calligraphy font, created in their memory, has finally been launched on Myfonts.com!

This week, I’ll be showing you some of the features of the font that I created specifically with weddings in mind.

The first thing I want to highlight is the special package of 66 ADD ON words. Some of the projects these can be used for are: invitations, envelope addressing, programs, Bride and Groom signs, Thank you tags and note cards.

Dom Loves Mary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

Today, I’m going to show you the cool ways you can use it for envelope addressing.

Dom Loves Mary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

I included ” deliver to” and embellished titles ( Mr. and Mrs.( as seen above), Mr. Miss, Ms, Doctor, The Doctors ) to add a special touch to your envelopes.  In this sample, I used a combination of both the Dom Loves Mary SCRIPT CONTEXTUAL and TEXT fonts, as well as additional letter flourishes, that come in two sets of 72 each.

I had so much fun creating all the different options, I just couldn’t stop myself!

Dom Loves Mary font, calligraphy font, cursive font, script font, wedding font, hand lettered font, calligraphy font

This sample was created using mostly the SCRIPT fonts ( A combination of STYLISTIC and STANDARD) with just the city and state in the TEXT font along with added flourishes on some of the letters in the names. One of my favorites is the abbreviation for number (No.). I think it  looks really cool when used for Apartment numbers:)

More Show and Tell tomorrow!

DIY Wedding Banner Instructions

In today’s post I’m sharing DIY wedding banner instructions.  The original post on the Wedding Chicks blog had so many darling details. These burlap banners really caught my eye.

So I thought I’d create some how to instructions for this and some other DIY items that I saw in this post. Today, I’ll start with the decorative burlap banner.

By the way all the beautiful photography is by Daniel Kim Photography.

just married sign, burlap wedding sign, diy wedding sign

This couple used burlap banners in a variety of places that really added a sweet touch to the outdoor scene.

diy wedding banner, burlap banner, love bannerThey may have purchased these from an Etsy shop but here’s my thought on how to make these easily and inexpensively.

burlap banner with hearts., diy burlap banner instrutcions

1. Cut burlap in the triangular or square shapes in the size you want.  Make sure they are wide and long enough to accommodate the size letters you want with extra room at the top ( 2-3″) to fold over the twine rope for hanging the banner.

Burlap comes in a variety of colors so you can even coordinate with your wedding colors.

2. Purchase  stencils or create your own by printing the letters you need from a font you like at the size needed.

( The one above is a free one I found online. Feel free to download it. )

3. Print final size you want on card stock or .003 acetate. Then cut out with an x-acto knife. (Createforless.com- 26.00 for a pack of 100 sheets of .003 acetate or check your local office supply store.)

4. Once you have your stencils cut, position them on the banner flags . I would put a light coating of a removable spray adhesive on the back on the stencil so the edges stay down and you get a clean line.  You could also try a glue stick in a few strategic places. Try this out first to make sure the stencil comes off easily.

5. Cover any area you don’t want painted.  Newspaper is always handy for this.  You can either use spray paint or brush on acrylic paint. These can be purchased at any craft store.

Remember to brush from the outside of the stencil into the center so the paint doesn’t get under the stencil.

6. Once the flags are dry, space them appropriately on a piece of twine leaving 3′ on either end for hanging. You might use clothespins to temporarily pin them in place.

7. Fold the top 2-3″ of the flags over the twine and adhere or sew in either a thread color to match the burlap or a color to match the lettering. Make sure the flag hugs the twine tightly so it won’t move around.

( Some options for adhesives: “Liquid thread”fabric glue or “Aleene’s fabric bond”)

That should do it!

I’ll be trying this out myself and offering the result as a giveaway on this blog in the next few weeks.

I’m taking suggestions for the wording.  “Just Married” ,”To have and to hold”?  What word/s would you like to see?

The next post will feature DIY mason jars.

Best,

Debi

DIY Montana Ranch Wedding

After looking at all of the beautiful ranch weddings I’ve seen on the blogs, I finally got to attend one myself in National Glacier Park in Montana!

DIY Ranch Wedding, Montana ranch wedding, DIY Wedding

Here’s the lovely couple: my nephew Chris and his darling new bride Erica as the new Mr. and Mrs. Cantoni.  There aren’t too many people who can pull off the “Frida Kahlo” style head piece, but with her gorgeous face, it looked stunning.  DIY Ranch Wedding Invitation, Montana Tanch wedding InvitationThe adorable DIY invitation, set the tone for this casual, fun, outdoor, ranch wedding.  The 4 page booklet included details about the beautiful surrounding area.Going to the Sun road, National Glacier Park MontanaThese photos were taken on a the “Going to the Sun” road.  Breathtaking is the only way to describe it. We even saw big horned sheep up close and personal!

Going to the Sun road, National Glacier Park Montana The wedding venue “The Rising Wolf Ranch” was as authentic a place as you can find. Think “A river runs through it”.  Some guests came for the week and took advantage of the time to hike, fish and take in all the area has to offer.  Some of us had only 3 days. Not enough time.Rising Wolf Ranch, Glacier Park, Montana, Ranch Wedding

With a beautiful garden of delphiniums, majestic mountains and big blue sky in the background, how can you go wrong?  In fact all of the wedding flowers, including the brides bouquet were picked from the ranch grounds.Rising Wolf Ranch, Glacier Park, Montana, Ranch WeddingRising Wolf Ranch, Glacier Park, Montana, Ranch Wedding

A group of talented friends and family sang the couple’s favorite song.  The ceremony was one of the most intimate I’d ever attended.  Poems were read by the siblings of both bride and groom, and a ceremonial bowl was rung to lift prayers and thoughts skyward for family members who had gone before us.

Before being exchanged, the rings were passed ( tied to a simple stick) among those gathered so each guest could give them their blessing.

In that time period, we were asked to stand and give thoughts and advice to the happy couple.  I barely got through mine without going into the ugly cry. Their vows were as non-traditional and genuine as the couple and you sensed the true nature of the words and what they meant to them.

Did I mention lots of happy tears?  My brother Jim and wife Gretchen and Erica’s parents, Mike and Connie, could not be happier with this lovely union.

The string of flags from the invite was seen on the itinerary, advice cards and room signs for those staying at the ranch.  Others, like me, stayed at the lovely Izaak Walton Inn not far away, which would also make a lovely wedding venue.

Best of all, I was there with all 6 of my siblings and my two sons!  You can’t beat that for good company.

There was so much to see in so little time.  We all agreed National Glacier Park will be added to our bucket list to explore fully.

Cheers to the happy couple, Chris and Erica!  We wish you all the love you can create in what will seem too short of a lifetime.

DFW Events in D Weddings Magazine

Congrats to DFW Events who has several of the beautiful weddings they coordinated featured in the latest issuue of D Wedding Magazine! Check out all the great detailst here.

On another page sits the creative table top design inspired by the life and art of Frida Kahlo.  I was so excited to contribute to this effort as I knew they would do something very cool.

When they asked me to do the lettering for the lace covered menus and terra cotta pot place cards, I was curious to see what they would do with them.  They did not dissappoint!

Here’s how they looked in my studio.

I added the lettering to these teal colored menus that were inserted into beautiful lace covers.  What a unique idea!  The  yellow flower placed on the plate added a nice pop of color.  A small detail that adds alot.  hand lettering, terra potta pot place cards, createive place card ideas, calligraphy on clay pots, Belluccia lettering

The terra cotta pots that served as place cards were filled with limes and a small dark pink rose.  How creative!  The overall look is festive and totally fitting as a tribute to the colorful artisit.

The gals at DFW Events never cease to amaze me with the great details they put into every event. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of it!

Creative DIY Wedding Ceremony Backdrop

This ceremony backdrop has to be the coolest wedding DIY I have seen yet.   The creative couple hand wrote poems on a long roll of butcher paper that was rolled out in place of an aisle runner. During the ceremony, the couples’ mothers read the poems.  How touching!

DIY wedding backdrop

I love the simplicity of this idea and what a big impact it had on the ceremony.  Couples could choose to write anything that has meaning to their relationship on the roll of paper.  This easy DIY would add a lovely personal touch to any wedding.

Chalkboard Signs for Rustic Country Wedding

I never know what DFW Events is going to ask me to do next, but I always know it’s going to be something fun and unique!  So it was no surprise when I was asked to make these rustic chalkboard signs for a recent Texas wedding.

Rustic wedding signs, calligraphy, lettering on chalkboard, chalkboard signs, DIY wedding signs, hand lettering

This 4 foot tall seating chart displayed the southern themed table names and seating assignments.  A hand drawn rope adds a whimsical touch.

Rustic wedding signs, calligraphy, lettering on chalkboard, chalkboard signs, DIY wedding signs, hand lettering

These boards were custom made to fit the quantity of names as well as withstand outdoor conditions ( think wind!).  They were displayed against barrels and bales of hay, adding to the country look. ( The plastic protecting the edges eventually came off:)

Rustic wedding signs, calligraphy, lettering on chalkboard, chalkboard signs, DIY wedding signs, hand lettering

Small chalkboards were used to display table names at the wedding’s reception.  The use of names instead of numbers added to the Texas theme.

It was fun to make these rustic Bride and Groom signs.  The hand drawn rope further carries the country decor.

And what’s a country wedding without a delicious s’more?  In a similar rope style I created this adorable sign for the reception’s S’more Bar.

I love contributing to creative weddings like this.  These chalkboard signs create a custom look and are a great addition to any wedding.

I’ll be sharing DIY pics in a future post so you can create your own signs.
