Custom Calligraphy on Wine Glasses

These wine glasses with custom calligraphy were given as gifts by my client. Now that the holiday is over, I can finally share pics with you.

The bottoms were painted in yellow and black.

The word “believe” ( get it “bee”-lieve:) was hand lettered on the body of the glass.

Then bees were painted with a flight path of black dots to link to the word. ( Most fun part!)

And of course one of them was chosen as “queen bee” with a gold crown on her head:)

Ciera Designs creates Chalkboard Sign

Today I want to introduce you to Ciera Holzenthal of  CieraDesign.com.

I came across her blog/design studio by chance and just loved everything I saw and read!

She is not only a great blogger but a very talented graphic designer.

Her services include: logo identity, invitations, editorial, business cards, brochures, WordPress, posters and more!

She recently created this lovely graphic using my Dom Loves Mary font family and has graciously allowed me to share it.

She used a combination of the three Dom Loves Mary Script fonts for the wording.

(You get all three in the Pro package.)

The capital N is from the Stylistic version, while most of the lower case letters are from the Contextual version.

To encapsulate the saying, she chose two simple flourishes. The top one comes from my Flourishes One set, while the bottom is from the Flourishes Two set.

I’m guessing she was able to find the chalkboard background online like this free one.

Watercolor Technique Workshop with Barbara Close

I’m always looking for ways to improve my lettering and design skills.  So when my local Dallas calligraphy guild, Kaligrafos, brought in Barbara Close for a Watercolor technique workshop, I signed up immediately!

Barbara is a fabulous teacher who introduced a variety of watercolor techniques that work well for lettering projects.  I was so ready for some fun after putting in so much work completing my Dom Loves Mary font.

Here are the results from my weekend of playing with Barbara!

I was so inspired by the weekend activities that I even came up with original sayings!

“Life is a Container”

Each of the pieces involves several techniques using a combination of watercolor, embossing, stenciling and collage. The sayings were brush lettered in gouache paint.  They were inspired by the works in progress and actually added after the each piece had been completed.

Hand Lettered Logo Design

This hand lettered logo design was done for an international client in Japan.

Our Skype conversation was a bit challenging but through visual and e-mail communication I was able to understand their needs.

This is the original drawing they sent me to help me understand the look they wanted.  From this I was able to identify the lower case look and basic placement of the flourishes.

It was really a pleasure to work with them and I look forward to seeing the logo on their website when it’s launched!

Yesterday I finally finished the last few special items for the “DomLovesMary” font.  These include  some flourished RSVP’s , Respond, ampersands and a curled banner.

These will be included in a Special package as well as in the glyph chart of the Pro version.

I had so much fun working with all of the flourish choices!  I hope customers will too.

I know many of you are as excited as I am about it’s release.  It’s almost here. I should know an exact date by the end of the week.  I’ll be sure to let you know!

Inspirational message in brush lettering

I’ve missed a few days of posting.  I’ve been off sharpening and adding to my skills in brush lettering.

Yesterday’s class was spent working with a flat brush and learning some cool techniques.   Only lots of practice, practice, practice will tell if I can pull them off:)

Can’t wait to see what today’s class will bring.

If I am brave enough, and if I actually produce anything I like, I may post some pics of what I learned

In the meantime, I just wanted to send you a nice message!

Hand Lettered Momento for New Baby

I’m excited to share the process of how I created this hand lettered memento for a friend’s new baby. In a former post, I shared my version of this project for my nephew’s wedding.  I promised to show the step by step so here it is.

These instructions are for people who are comfortable with lettering with a brush. This requires hand lettering skills that you may not have.  So another idea is to create it on the computer using different fonts.  Then using a light table and a light colored paper, you can transfer the letters onto the paper and paint them in.

Step 1: Layout lettering design in pencil on 12″ x 12″ card stock ( available in any color in the scrap booking section at craft stores).  Be sure to measure out all the spaces for all the information you want to include beforehand.  Don’t forget to leave space for a border to allow for framing.

Step 2: Mix up enough paint to letter the entire project.  I used gouache paint in a light pink on black paper for this project. Gouache is a water based paint available at craft and art stores.

Step 3: Be sure to work from the top of the paper down to the bottom.  Keep another sheet of paper underneath your hand/arm so you don’t get oil from your skin on the paper.

Step 4: When you are completely finished, gently and carefully erase all the pencil lines with a “Magic Rub” eraser,  or something similar.  Hold the paper as you erase so it doesn’t crinkle up from too strong of a force.

There you have it.  Please know that this is a very labor intensive project so take your time.

This gift will be on it’s way to Meredith and Josh Budwin.  They are the proud new parents to Baby Sophie who is growing cuter every day !

Hand Lettered Wedding Momento

Just wanted to share this hand lettered wedding momento I created for my nephew and his new bride who were married on a beautiful Ranch in Montana at the end of July.

It was a sweet, touching, intimate ceremony that everyone who attended will never forget.

You may remember this picture from the previous post.

I incorporated his purple tie and her floral head piece to personalize it even more.

The art piece was hand painted with water based gouache on black 12″ x 12″ card stock.

I hope it will remind them of their lovely wedding weekend.

They’ve since had a second celebration in Ohio for those who couldn’t attend the Montana ceremony.

I was excited to celebrate with them for a second time to continue the party !

This time we got to “make the union official” with the traditional singing of “Going to the Chapel.”

And to enjoy another piece of wedding cake:)

I’m very excited to share a sampling of my new “DomLovesMary” cursive font in this personalized wedding artwork.

The font family will consist of three versions of the upper and lower case alphabet that can easily be mixed and matched to create a custom look.

In addition, there will be two sets of flourishes that were specifically created to be added on to the letters. 

You can choose to use the simpler style alphabet for a clean look or dress it up with flourishes to suit your taste !

Kind of like adding accessories to an outfit:)

1953 Mary Arnone Sementelli with bridesmaids

In the meantime, here’s a pic of the bride to be with her bridesmaids and junior bridesmaid.

Aren’t those dresses gorgeous?  They were navy and light blue.

Very unusual color choice for 1953.

Thumb Print Tree Guest Sign Give Away

I previously posted a custom thumb print tree I created for a lovely bride, Kate.  She was kind enough to send me her photographer’s pics of the print all filled out as well as an “action” shot.  The photos were taken by the talented Dallas based  Sarah Kate Photographer. 

It’s so nice to know the finished print is now hanging in Kate and John’s home !

Love how the combo of two green stamp colors brings some interest and the beautiful blue highlights the bride and groom’s prints.

It’s cool to see how a few people left their “leaf” print on the grass.

The  original tree was hand drawn with pointed pen and Sumi ink on Arches archival paper.  At  24″ x 36″ it has enough room to fit 250- 300 thumbprints.

The hand lettering is done in my Belluccia style.

Belluccia’s First Birthday!

Cake for everyone!

Cake for everyone!  One year ago today Belluccia was first released on MyFonts.com.  She immediately made the Hot New Fonts list, and the Best Seller’s list.  Next she was one of five fonts on the Rising Star list for July 2011.  She continued her climb  to be included on the Most Popular Fonts of 2011 list.

And as she celebrates her first birthday, she is still on the Best Seller’s list!

So I want to say “Thanks” to all of you who have purchased Belluccia and included her in your beautiful designs.
